The World Is Burning: The Headlines Project

The World is Burning. With the election now over, a new beginning is upon us. Many people voted for Donald Trump. Many people voted for Donald Trump for a variety of reasons. The Headlines Project is going to shift to discussing policy of Donald Trump; while there are certainly some positives, I hope to educate more on progressive agenda, and the issues that are at the forefront of our agenda. With any luck, we can help shift policy to ensure that those issues that matter to us are still being taken care of.

That being said, the very first issue I'd like to talk about is climate change. The world is burning, almost literally, friends. We've been destroying our atmosphere for a very, very long time, and we're seeing the effects of that destruction now. Weather shifts, polar icecaps melting, and more are all due to the climate change we instigated.

Donald Trump's policy that he platformed on includes throwing away the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as Obama's Clean Power Plan. Both of these are necessary steps American has promised to take in order to help stem the tide of climate change. In the case of the Paris Climate Agreement, probably the most critical aspect of protecting against climate change is in danger: Ensuring the largest nations who can affect climate change do whatever they can to reduce emissions.

His 100 day plan says it all. Just read these points:

• We’re going to rescind all the job-destroying Obama executive actions including the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule.
• We’re going to save the coal industry and other industries threatened by Hillary Clinton’s extremist agenda.
• I’m going to ask Trans Canada to renew its permit application for the Keystone Pipeline.
• We’re going to lift moratoriums on energy production in federal areas
• We’re going to revoke policies that impose unwarranted restrictions on new drilling technologies. These technologies create millions of jobs with a smaller footprint than ever before.
• We’re going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs.
• Any regulation that is outdated, unnecessary, bad for workers, or contrary to the national interest will be scrapped. We will also eliminate duplication, provide regulatory certainty, and trust local officials and local residents.
• Any future regulation will go through a simple test: is this regulation good for the American worker? If it doesn’t pass this test, the rule will not be approved.

So, if it is bad for an American worker, it's bad for the world, right? Don't more jobs mean a better economy?

Sure, in some cases, that's true. However, you can also increase jobs by no longer utilizing computers for anything, ending robotic manufacturing, and making it illegal to drive yourself to work. That doesn't mean we should do it, because it is clear each of those actions is a step away from improving the lives of humanity.

Nobody said progress was easy. There are going to be bumps in the road, and yes, people will lose their jobs. We need a platform that will help those that lose their jobs land on their feet again, get job training, and support them for as long as necessary.

Our world is important. To let the world burn just to bring back dated industries may be fine for the short term, but for the long term, we'll see a lot worse things happen.
