Who cares about real creators, anyway?

(I think) this is why Meta, Google & more love AI slop

A partially AI-generated image of dusty pale hands reaching up from the abyss; everything has a mint-green tint to it. All the hands are distorted in some way, and there are glitch effects in areas of the image too.

AI slop is everywhere.

Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, even Bluesky has plenty of AI slop content..

..And that won't change any time soon, because it's just too damned profitable.

You know that old phrase "there is no such thing as bad press"? Well, a corollary for the modern social media landscape is "there is no such thing as bad engagement".

In fact, what I believe to most likely be true is this: AI slop is going to end up prioritized over real creators just because it's infinite.. And the people who crank out the AI slop? They follow the corpo morality playbook: Profit above all.

The easier it becomes to make it, and the more people realize they might be able to make some money with low-effort slop? Yeah, we're already seeing it overtake real content creators in many folks' news feeds.

Additionally, AI slop creators have the benefit of crafting shitty content that gets engagement without actually having to put themselves out there.. This means fewer problematic creators to accidentally endorse. Well, the problematic creators will still exist.. We just won't know they are problematic creators because they hide behind their AI slop rather than putting their real selves out there.

An AI slop creator's mugshot won't be recognized from a child abuse sting after an endorsement by the platform. An AI slop creator being sexually assaulted at a con won't create an uncomfortable series of questions for the con's host.

An AI slop creator just creates AI slop.. And if they stop for any reason, there are countless others to take their place, because it's easy to crank this shit out. Folks can produce multiple videos a day easily, creating an explosion of content for you to consume..

..and folks will keep interacting with the content. They'll comment "Praise the Lord!" or "This is AI slop". They'll like, or dislike it. They'll share it with their friends to either entertain them or share in the disgust of the slop.

More importantly, they'll waddle up to the trough to keep watching.. And watching.. And watching.

Don't want to watch AI slop? Too bad. The algorithm has determined you to be a suitable host for the brain drain, so we're gonna keep on pushing it at you.. Especially once it's no longer easy to tell if it's AI slop or not.

You'll just keep being a consumer, whether you like it or not.
